St. Anthony of Padua, born Ferdinand in 1195 in a noble family of Lisbon, Portugal, is one of the most revered saints in the Catholic Church. In 1212, after being initially a member of the Augustinian Order, he was inspired by the martyrs of the Franciscan Order in Morocco to join the Franciscans, taking the name Anthony in preparation for missionary work in Africa.

Pope Gregory IX, who personally knew St. Anthony, declared him a saint just one year after his death. Pope Leo XIII granted him the title of "Universal Saint."
